ORNELLA MEI ARCHITECTS
ECHOES OF LIGHT
Mise en lumière urbaine
Paris
2001
This project was developed in collaboration with Kelichi Tahara, artist and lighting designer.
The route of the Canal St Martin is characterised in certain places of Paris by vaulted underground passages. These places are silent, majestic and magic. By projecting a lighting we added a poetic dimension to these places. The projection of rainbows done through projectors was specially designed for this purpose, and the ambience was punctuated by the music that follows the boats that pass.
"This installation brings us closer to the myth. The spectator is immersed in the aquatic atmosphere of the canal which gives the impression of both catacambes and a vital network. The place is linked to life and death, because although it is underground, its system conveys penetrating impulses. During the visit, one sees an evolution from the inside out, from black and white to the more human and “lived in” aspect of what Paris has to offer."
